Holding a PhD in chemical sciences from Université Paris-Saclay, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in total synthesis at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. He then joined the Strasbourg laboratory of Professor J.-M. Lehn (Nobel Prize in Chemistry) as a CNRS researcher. He established his own research team at the Charles Sadron Institute in 2008 and was appointed Distinguished Professor (PRCE2) at the University of Strasbourg in 2016.
He served as Deputy Director of the Charles Sadron Institute (CNRS Research Unit) from 2012 to 2023 and as Director of the Federation for Research on Materials and Nanosciences in the Grand Est region from 2018 to 2023. He has also been the University of Strasbourg's Scientific Integrity Officer since 2017.
His research projects have been recognized with the most prestigious European grants: ERC StG and ERC Advanced Grants, FET-Open, ITN, and DN MSCA.
He was appointed a junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) in 2013 and a senior member in 2023. He is the recipient of the Henry Le Chatelier and DCO prizes from the French Chemical Society. In 2024, he received the CNRS Silver Medal for the originality, quality, and significance of his research work.
